Chinese health authorities have confirmed this Saturday the appearance of the first case of the omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country’s capital, Beijing, less than three weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics and amid numerous outbreaks declared during the last weeks in the adjacent regions, according to the international state newspaper ‘Global Times’.

Hours earlier, the authorities also confirmed the presence of the omicron variant in the large city of Shanghai and the province of Canton.

China added another 104 local coronavirus cases on Friday amid precautionary lockdowns in areas of Xian, Tianjin, Zhengzhou and Shenzhen, according to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in China has reached 104,745, including 3,451 patients still receiving treatment, of whom 11 were in serious condition. A total of 4,636 have died in the country as a result of the coronavirus.
